Update December 4, 2017

We now have a new schedule with an uninterrupted literacy block and specials are now on a Wave Day. There were just some minor tweaks to our schedule and the students are adjusting well to the schedule.

Many students ear buds/headphones are broken or no longer work.  Please check with your child to see if he/she need a new set.

As the winter holidays are quickly approaching, third graders have been busy learning!  In reading students have been focused on learning how using context clues can help them figure out the meaning of an unknown word.  They also have been learning how to determine the central message, or moral, of a story.   Next, students will be learning about nonfiction text features and how those features enable us to better comprehend text.

In math, students have been working on multiplication.  We have been working on seeing patterns on a multiplication table and learning strategies for multiplying.  Students have also been learning about the zero, identity and commutative properties of multiplication.  Students have started created flash cards for the facts they are learning to practice. Please assist your child in practicing their facts.

In word study, our focus has been studying the different parts of speech such as nouns, verbs, and adverbs.  We will continue to identify and study the different parts of speech until after the holiday break.  We have also been working on having students using resources (dictionary, word wall) to help them spell while writing.

In writing, students have been learning about opinion writing.  Students are working hard on learning how to back up his/her opinion with details and examples.  Students are also continuing to learn about the conventions of writing, such as when to indent, where capital letters should be placed, and when and where to use punctuation.

In science, we are currently learning about the skeletal system, muscles, and skin.  Students will also be learning about Christmas celebrations and traditions around the world.
